6.18 explain the use of step-up and step-down transformers in the largescale generation and transmission of electrical energy
In the national grid (the system which delivers electricity around the country) transformers are used. Because the wires are long there is more resistance, so a high current will cause a lot of heat; which is dangerous and looses a lot of energy. When electricity leaves a power plant, a step up transformer is used, this means the voltage is high, but the current is low. When electricity reaches a home or business it is stepped down to make it useful in appliances that we use, the wires are shorter so less of a danger is presented by this.

Step-ups are used to lower the current as P=I2R (2 shows squared) this is the power loss during transmission and as P/I=V the lower the current the higher the higher the voltage (as the lower the dividing factor the higher the product you get) and therefore you have significantly reduced power loss as I is squares in power loss so by decreasing the current you get a significant decrease in power loss hence the use of transformers (thought a more equation based answer might be useful)

THIS BLOG IS SHIT! HER NOTES ARE WRONG AND USELESS. IF U WANT TO DO GOOD ON YOUR EXAMS THAN DON'T USE THIS NOTES FOR REVISION.
ReplyDeleteread her bio please, it is not supposed to be 100% right

DeleteStep-Down Transformer is the one that converts a high-voltage and low-current into a low-voltage, high-current power. These are mostly required in the domestic consumption. These are designed to withstand electrical impulses and thermal and dynamic stresses. It ensures low power loss, low maintenance cost, and low noise.
