3.20 describe the role of total internal reflection in transmitting information along optical fibres and in prisms
Beyond the critical angle, light will be reflected back into the medium they came from at the same angle. In this way they are trapped in the medium.

Don't think total internal reflection comes up anywhere else but another requirement for total internal reflection is that the light has to be moving from a more optically dense medium to a less optically dense medium and when that happens and when that happens beyond the critical angle total internal reflection occurs
